Discipleship Foundations Parts 1 & 2

The global church increasingly recognise that we are in a time of crisis in how we understand disciplng the next generation. In “Rethinking Discipleship”, Terry Williams brings us back to the biblical mandate that Jesus gives us.

This is a 6-part video series that helps dive into the Why, What and How of discipleship. These are essential questions you, your family, church and Christian school can delve into. Terry then takes you through the ”8 Faith Formation Pillars” to pass down faith.

Part 1: The Discipleship Crisis & Starting with “Why”

The “Why” Shift: Ministry often focuses on what we do (programs, classes) and how to do it, neglecting why we do it. Discipleship must start with the core purpose: developing lifelong, active followers of Jesus.

The Problem: Current church methods are losing over 50% of young people from the Christian faith. A mass exodus occurs as youth grow into adulthood.

Grammar of the Great Commission: In Matthew 28, the central verb/command is to make disciples; “going,” “baptizing,” and “teaching” are secondary participles assumed along the way.

Part 2: Biblical Family & Historical Shifts

Inner Transformation (Morphous): True discipleship focuses on Christ formed within us rather than outward religious appearance.

Biblical Family Model: Biblically, family is defined as bayit (household) plus community working together, rather than just the modern nuclear family.

The Industrial Revolution Shift: The rise of factories fragmented households. The creation of Sunday schools—though well-intentioned—eventually disempowered families by outsourcing spiritual formation to the church.
